Privacy Policy

MOTO RIDES ("we", "us") explains in this Privacy Policy how we collect, use, store, and share personal information when you use our mobile application and related services in Kenya.

1. Information we collect

We collect only what we need to operate rides, payments, safety, and support.

  • Account: name, phone number, email, password (stored hashed), profile photo, role (rider/driver), optional student ID or verification documents for drivers.
  • Location: pickup and destination addresses; location data during active rides and, for drivers, while available online to enable matching—plus saved favourite places.
  • Payments: M-Pesa phone number used for STK prompts, payment status references, transaction history, in-app wallet balance and ledger entries (top-up and withdrawal only—not ride checkout).
  • Device & app: device type, OS version, push notification token, IP address, app interactions, crash and error logs for reliability.
  • Safety: emergency contacts you add, emergency reports, ride metadata needed for disputes and support.

2. Why we collect it

  • Provide ride matching, navigation, fare calculation, and trip tracking.
  • Process M-Pesa ride payments and wallet top-ups/withdrawals through our payment partner.
  • Verify drivers, prevent fraud, and keep accounts secure.
  • Send trip, payment, and service notifications.
  • Respond to support requests and legal obligations.

3. How we use your information

We use personal data to operate and improve the platform, communicate with you about your account and trips, enforce our Terms, and comply with applicable law.

We do not sell your data for advertising

We do not sell personal data and do not use user data for third-party advertising.

We do not share personal information with data brokers or ad networks for their independent marketing purposes.

4. Location data

Location data is collected during active rides and, for drivers, during driver availability to enable navigation, matching, and safety features. We do not use location to track you for unrelated advertising.

You can disable location in device settings, but core ride features may not work without it when a trip or driver availability requires it.

During an active trip, limited trip information (such as name and location) may be visible to the other party and, if you use emergency features, to contacts or responders you choose.

5. Payment data

Ride payments are processed exclusively via M-Pesa (STK push). Wallet is used only for top-ups (including saving funds in your wallet balance) and withdrawals—not for paying ride fares.

We do not store your M-Pesa PIN. Ride payments are initiated via Safaricom STK through our payment processor (IntaSend). Wallet funds are held and moved according to our payment partner and in-app ledger rules.

6. Who we share information with

  • Other users: during a trip, riders and drivers see information needed to complete the ride (e.g. name, photo, vehicle details, pickup/destination, live location while the trip is active).
  • Service providers: IntaSend (payments), Google Maps (geocoding and places), cloud hosting and image storage for profile/documents, SMS/notification providers, push delivery (Expo/FCM where configured)—only to perform services on our behalf.
  • Authorities: when required by law, court order, or to protect safety and rights.
  • Business transfers: if we merge or sell assets, data may transfer subject to this Policy.

7. Data retention

  • Account profile: while your account is active and for a reasonable period after closure where required for support or law.
  • Trip and payment records: retained as needed for tax, fraud prevention, and dispute resolution (typically up to seven years where law requires).
  • Location history tied to trips: retained with trip records; saved places until you delete them.
  • Support and security logs: limited retention for investigation and abuse prevention.

8. Security

We use HTTPS for data in transit, access controls, hashed passwords, and industry-standard practices. No system is perfectly secure; report concerns via in-app support.

9. Your rights & account deletion

  • Access and update profile information in the app.
  • Request correction of inaccurate data via support.
  • Control notification and location permissions in device settings.
  • Opt out of non-essential marketing where offered.

Data deletion guarantee

Users can request account deletion and data removal through the in-app request flow (Profile → Delete Account) or by emailing support. Requests are processed within a reasonable timeframe, subject to legal retention requirements (for example payment, tax, or fraud-prevention records we must keep by law).

We verify identity before completing deletion to protect your account from unauthorized requests.

10. Children

The service is for users aged 18 and over. We do not knowingly collect data from anyone under 18.

11. Changes

We may update this Policy. Material changes will be posted in the app or communicated by email or notification. Continued use after the effective date means you accept the updated Policy.
